I had my preconceived notions that this “Gatsby” would be a flat out, cheap, uninspiring, commercialized rendezvous given previous testimonies I’ve heard and read, so I decided to swear off seeing it given this was my favorite book, and I didn’t wanna see it presented as this type of garbage. But I went to celebrate my stepsister’s birthday, and now… those preconceived notions have now been confirmed.

You ever had not a mind fuck, but a mind explosion?! If not, let me define it for you: it’s when your mind is so overcome with thoughts from thrilling, maybe even unreal, things that it feels like your brain is cracking and ready to burst into a million pieces from the intensity of these thoughts. That’s what happened to me at “Stranger Things: The First Shadow.”

I’ve gotten a little reflective this past week or so now. It all started with a conversation in therapy about finding the balance in work and joy in performing. I learned it all ties back to a very open-ended question: “why we do it.” I’m never dishonest to any of you on here when I write my reviews and whatnot, and I won’t stop now. In truth, I never pondered that question. It’s not that I never wanted to; it was just something that hadn’t crossed my mind. So I was tasked to spend some time to think of a response not just for therapy, but for myself as an artist. I’ve shared this answer amongst family members and my therapist, but I feel truly comfortable enough to share it with all of you given theater and performance is an enormous part of my DNA. So, here we go.

I went to “Dead Outlaw” during its run downtown on a whim of sheer curiosity, and on its first preview. When I walked out of that tiny theater 100 minutes later, I knew I had seen the art of musical theater storytelling redefined, reassembled, and reborn. I knew it was destined for something more, and I was right. Now in its Broadway carnation, I am thrilled to say it hasn’t lost a smidge of that magic; it all felt fresh and new to me again.

What did I tell you about Second Stage? They’ve had a golden streak in family dramas. And even though it’s not exactly produced by them, it still goes to show that their home base at the Hayes has made these stories triumphant! Once again it’s been deemed victorious for “Purpose,” Branden Jacobs-Jenkins’ searing, biting, and uncomfortably humorous new work following his success from “Appropriate.”

Es muy caliente when it comes to the rhythm, the pulse, and the romance within the carefully woven plot lines that give life to “Buena Vista Social Club,” a musical tale of glory and heartbreak that brings the soul of Cuba to the Broadway stage!

How can you go wrong with one of Broadway’s bests in one of Broadway’s greatest stage roles of all time? You really can’t!

It seems of late that we’ve been getting quite a renaissance in family dramas, andhas been the quite the mastermind in terms of pumping these specific stories out. After their recent successes with “Appropriate” and “Mother Play,” and it’ll likely happen again with their upcoming “Purpose,” it’s seems highly agreeable that their most recent offering shows there’s no signs of stopping.

Woke culture is all around us, especially among my generation, and there’s no denying that. There are times when it is absolutely necessary to listen to it, and there’s also times to simply just shut it out. And when you try to battle so many of these topics onstage while merely trying to highlight one specific wildly-debated topic, you begin to lose sight of the entire picture of what the heck this story’s all about.
